34.64.2 Describe the basic principles of first aid.

The basic principles of first aid are to protect life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery until further medical assistance is available.

Make the scene safe

• Check for danger to yourself, the casualty and bystanders.

• Secure the emergency site where possible to prevent further injury.

• Move the casualty only if necessary for safety or treatment.

Assess and treat the casualty

• Identify any immediate life-threatening conditions.

• Provide appropriate first aid treatment within your level of training.

• Minimise pain and help stabilise the casualty’s condition.

• Reassure the casualty and explain what is happening.

Get further help

• Communicate clearly with bystanders and emergency services.

• Arrange further medical assistance when required.
