34.48 Judgement and Decision Making

Pilot judgement is the ability to recognise and analyse relevant information and use it to make safe decisions.

Good judgement develops from a combination of knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience. A pilot must not only know what to do and be able to do it, but must also have an appropriate attitude towards safety and risk.

34.48.2 Distinguish between skills, knowledge and attitudes.

Knowledge

Knowledge is the information and understanding a pilot has acquired through study, training and experience.

Examples include knowledge of:

  • Aircraft systems and limitations.
  • Rules and procedures.
  • Weather.
  • Navigation.
  • Human factors.
  • Emergency procedures.

Knowledge provides the pilot with the information needed to understand a situation and determine what actions are available.

Skills

Skills are the learned abilities required to apply knowledge and perform a task correctly.
