Novice Pilot Certificate

Requirements for Application or Renewal

An applicant must:

  • be at least 16 years of age;
  • meet the Medical Fitness requirements;
  • meet the Fit and Proper requirements.

 

There is:

  • no minimum flight time required; and
  • no flight test required.

 

Privileges and Limitations

A Novice Pilot Certificate allows the holder to fly a microlight as pilot-in-command under the supervision of an Instructor for the purpose of gaining experience or regaining a higher certificate.

A Novice Pilot:

  • must not carry passengers;
  • must have all flights approved by a RAANZ Instructor;
  • is not PIC during dual flights — the Instructor is PIC;
  • must meet the required solo standards before first solo;
  • requires a dual check at least every 90 days to continue solo flying;
  • may operate under Remote Supervision where the required conditions are met.

 

The certificate is valid for a maximum of 1 year.

 

Key point

Novice = supervised flying, no passengers, 90-day dual check, 1-year certificate.
