MBZ — Mandatory Broadcast Zone

A Mandatory Broadcast Zone (MBZ) is an area of uncontrolled airspace where pilots are required to make specified radio broadcasts.

MBZs are commonly established:

• around busy uncontrolled aerodromes; or
• in areas where there is a high concentration of aircraft, such as intensive tourist operations.

Requirements Within an MBZ

When operating within an MBZ, the pilot must:

• make the required radio broadcasts on the assigned frequency;
• maintain a listening watch on that frequency; and
• switch on the aircraft's landing lights or anti-collision lights, if fitted.

The appropriate:

• MBZ frequency;
• vertical and lateral limits; and
• required reporting interval

are shown on the applicable aeronautical charts.

Mandatory Radio Broadcasts

The following broadcasts must be made:

On Entry

Broadcast:

• callsign;
• position;
• altitude; and
• intentions within the MBZ.

When Joining an Aerodrome Circuit

Broadcast:

• callsign;
• position;
• altitude; and
• joining intentions.
