14.24 Engine Management - Piston
14.24.2 State the safety precautions to be taken before starting the engine.
Before starting an aircraft engine, the following safety precautions must be observed:
- Ensure the area around the aircraft is clear of people, equipment, and obstacles
- Position the aircraft safely, with parking brake ON and wheels chocked if required
- Confirm a clear propeller area and call “CLEAR PROP” before starting
- Check that the fuel is ON, correct tank selected, and sufficient fuel available
- Set mixture, throttle, and carb heat as required for starting
- Ensure magnetos are OFF before priming or moving the propeller
- Verify that all loose items are secured and doors are properly latched
- Confirm a competent person is at the controls (especially for hand starting)
- Check engine instruments and electrical systems are ready for operation
These precautions help prevent injury, avoid accidental engine start hazards, and ensure safe and controlled engine operation.
14.24.4 In general terms, explain the procedures for:
(a) staring the engine in cold temperatures;
In cold conditions, engine starting requires additional care due to thick oil, reduced battery efficiency, and poor fuel vaporisation.
