12.110 Centre of Gravity (C of G)

12.110.2 State the reasons for operating an aircraft within the C of G limits.

Operating an aircraft within the C of G limits is important for several reasons. First, it ensures that the aircraft is stable and controllable during all phases of flight. If the C of G is too far forward or aft, the aircraft may be difficult or impossible to control, which can lead to accidents. Second, operating within the C of G limits ensures that the aircraft is not overloaded in terms of weight and balance. Overloading the aircraft can lead to structural damage or failure, which can also lead to accidents. Third, operating within the C of G limits ensures that the aircraft is operating safely and within the limitations specified by the aircraft manufacturer. If the aircraft is operated outside of the C of G limits, it may be in violation of the aircraft's operating limitations, which can lead to regulatory action. Finally, operating within the C of G limits ensures that the aircraft is operating efficiently. If the C of G is too far forward or aft, it can lead to increased drag and decreased performance, which can result in higher fuel consumption and decreased range.
