64.24 Turbine Engine Air Cooling and Sealing

64.24.2 Describe the requirement for cooling and sealing of turbine engine components.

Cooling and sealing of turbine engine components are critical requirements for ensuring safe and efficient engine operation.

The high temperatures and pressures present in the combustion chamber and other parts of the engine can cause damage to the engine components if they are not properly cooled and sealed.

Cooling of turbine engine components is achieved through the use of a variety of methods, including air cooling, oil cooling, and fuel cooling.

Air cooling is the most common method and involves the use of compressor bleed air to cool the turbine components.

Oil cooling and fuel cooling are less common methods and involve the use of oil or fuel to cool the turbine components.

Sealing of turbine engine components is achieved through the use of a variety of methods, including labyrinth seals, brush seals, and abradable seals.

Labyrinth seals are the most common type of seal and consist of a series of small, closely spaced fins that create a tortuous path for the hot gases to flow through, reducing the amount of hot gas that leaks past the seal.
