65.22.2 Describe general procedures for starting and shutting down a turbine engine.

Turbine Engine Starting

Before starting, ensure all required pre-start checks have been completed in accordance with the aircraft or engine manufacturer's procedures.

A typical turbine engine start involves:

  • switching on the required electrical power;

  • positioning the engine controls for starting;

  • engaging the starter;

  • allowing the compressor to reach the required starting RPM;

  • introducing fuel and ignition at the specified point in the start sequence;

  • monitoring for a rise in turbine temperature;

  • confirming oil pressure develops within the required time;

  • monitoring engine RPM and other engine indications as the engine accelerates; and

  • disengaging or allowing the starter to disengage at the specified engine speed.
