6.42 Chart Preparation

6.42.2 Mark the following on a map:

Before flight, the route should be clearly marked on the chart so that the required information can be identified quickly in flight.

(a) departure aerodrome, turning points, and destination aerodrome;

Clearly mark the:

  • Departure aerodrome (ADEP).

  • Turning points along the route.

  • Destination aerodrome (ADES).

Turning points should be based on features that are easy to identify from the air.

(b) tracks;

Draw a straight line between each turning point to show the planned track.

(c) heading change markings, either 1:60 or drift lines;

Mark the chart so that any track error can be quickly estimated and corrected in flight.

This may be done using:

  • 1:60 markings, to assist with estimating Track Error (TE) and Closing Angle (CA); or

  • Drift lines, drawn either side of the planned track, to provide a quick visual estimate of the correction required.

These markings allow a heading change to be determined without carrying out lengthy calculations in flight.

(d) ETA amendment markings.

Mark suitable points along the track where progress can be checked against the planned time.
