The Flight Computer

The analogue flight computer, also known as a navigation computer, is a mechanical slide rule used in aviation for various calculations in flight planning.

Pilots use it before or during flights for tasks like calculating:

  • fuel consumption,
  • airspeed,
  • wind correction,
  • time en route, and
  • other flight planning calculations.

It consists of rotating dials and scales that allow pilots to perform these calculations quickly and accurately without needing electronic devices.

It's a handy tool, especially in situations where electronic devices may not be available or reliable.

Reading the Navigation Computer

To accurately read the scales on the calculator side of the computer, it's important to understand how the values of the graduations on these scales change.

The graduations on the scales represent different values and knowing how these values change can help you make precise calculations using the calculator side of the computer.

By understanding the increments between each graduation mark, you can determine the exact value each mark represents and perform calculations more effectively.
