4.60 Communications

4.60.2 Derive from operational publications, the required radio frequency for communicating with specified ATC units.

Pilots must be able to use current operational publications to find the correct radio frequency for the ATS unit or aerodrome being used.

Radio frequencies may be found in:

• AIP GEN 3.7, including Table GEN 3.7-1;
• AIP ENR pages for en-route communication information;
• AIP AD aerodrome pages and charts;
• VFR charts, where applicable; and
• current NOTAMs, if a frequency or communication facility has changed temporarily.

Example 1: AIP GEN 3.7 frequency table

AIP GEN 3.7 contains radio communication and navigation facility information for the New Zealand FIR.

Table GEN 3.7-1 can be used to identify the appropriate ATS unit and frequency for the area of operation.

When using this table, look for:

• the relevant ATS unit;
• the applicable service or area;
• the published frequency; and
• any notes or limits that affect when the frequency is used.

Example 2: AIP AD aerodrome communication box

AIP AD aerodrome charts show the communication frequencies used at or near a specific aerodrome.

These may include:

• Tower;
• Ground;
• Approach;
• ATIS;
• AFIS;
• UNICOM;
• AWIB; or
• the unattended aerodrome frequency.
