8.44 New Zealand Weather
New Zealand’s weather is strongly influenced by its latitude, oceanic surroundings, and topography. These factors produce a generally temperate, maritime climate, with large local variations caused by mountains and wind direction.
8.44.2 Describe how the following factors determine the general weather features found around New Zealand:
(a) latitude;
New Zealand lies between approximately 34°S and 47°S, in the temperate latitudes.
This means New Zealand is affected by:
- mid-latitude weather systems
- frequent fronts and depressions
- strong westerly airflow
- seasonal temperature changes
The north of New Zealand is generally warmer, while the south is generally cooler. However, local weather is also strongly affected by the surrounding ocean and terrain.
