Medium Turns

AIM:

To turn the gyro with a constant angle of bank, constant altitude & in balance

CONSIDERATIONS:

In order to change direction, we need a force to the centre of the turn

  • To achieve this, we bank the gyroplane

        0° A of B                                             30° A of B

force (L) against W is =                      force (VCL) against W is ≠

In a turn, we must ↑L to ↑VCL, so we ↑AofA by using aft stick

AIRCRAFT MANAGEMENT:

  • Smooth movement of controls
  • CTR - vertical & lateral boundaries
  • Taxi - Instrument checks - Compass
  • VFR - 5 2 5

HUMAN FACTORS:

  • Disorientation - Large ref pt
  • Situation Awareness - Look, Listen
  • Resisting bank - tendency to sit up straight

AIR EXERCISE:

Demo:             Medium turn, 360°, approx 30° A of B

  • Select Ref pt
  • Select Ref altitude

Entry

  • Lookout - opposite to direction of turn first

  • Stick - Roll in, slight back pressure
  • Hold at approx 30° A of B
  • Increase power (approx 200 RPM)
  • Balance

Maintain

  • Lookout           - in direction of turn
  • Attitude           - reference to horizon
  • Instruments    - string, ALT, ASI, VSI

Exit

  • Anticipate ref pt
  • Decrease power to cruise (4800 RPM)
  • Roll level with stick
  • Relieve stick back pressure

Student Practice

Climbing turn

  • set nose attitude for normal climb speed
  • limit bank angle to 30° max

Note: ↓ ROC

Descending turn

  • set attitude for normal descent speed
  • limit bank angle to 30° max
