34.42 Ageing
34.42.2 Describe methods by which age-related changes in memory and speed of information processing can be moderated by older pilots.
Ageing may gradually reduce memory and the speed at which information is processed.
Older pilots can help moderate these effects by:
maintaining regular flying practice and recurrent training;
using checklists, written notes and memory aids;
allowing extra time for planning and decision-making;
reducing unnecessary workload, distractions and time pressure; and
maintaining good physical fitness, sleep and general health.
Experience can also help compensate for slower information processing, as familiar situations may be recognised and managed more quickly.
Key point
Training, preparation, memory aids and reduced workload can help compensate for age-related changes.
