12.30 Fuel Tanks

12.30.2 Describe the function of the following components of a simple fuel system:

(a) fuel tank, sump, drain point, supply line standpipe, vents, overflow drain;

The following components of a simple fuel system have the following functions:

1. Fuel Tank:

The fuel tank stores the fuel for the engine. It is typically made of aluminum or plastic and is located in the wings or fuselage of the aircraft.

2. Sump:

The sump is located at the bottom of the fuel tank and collects any water or debris that may have entered the tank. It is equipped with a drain valve that allows the pilot to drain any contaminants from the tank.

3. Drain Point:

The drain point is located on the bottom of the sump and allows the pilot to drain any water or debris that has collected in the sump.

4. Supply Line Standpipe:

The supply line standpipe is located in the fuel tank and ensures that the engine always has a supply of fuel. It is a vertical pipe that extends from the bottom of the tank to the top and has a screen at the bottom to prevent debris from entering the fuel system.
