Special Procedure Areas — SPA

Special Procedure Areas (SPAs) are no longer used in New Zealand.

They were replaced by Common Frequency Zones (CFZs) in 2007.

This material is retained because questions relating to SPAs may still appear in the RAANZ question database.

How SPAs Operated

SPAs were:

  • not mandatory broadcast airspace;
  • established to encourage pilots operating in an area to use a common radio frequency; and
  • intended to improve situational awareness in areas of concentrated aircraft activity.
