12.50.2 Describe the function and operation of an aircraft ELT.

An Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) is an avionics device that is installed in an aircraft to help rescuers locate the aircraft in the event of an emergency.

The ELT is designed to activate automatically or manually when the aircraft is involved in an accident or emergency situation.

The ELT operates on a specific frequency that is monitored by search and rescue authorities.

When the ELT is activated, it sends a distress signal that includes the aircraft's registration number and location information.

The signal is transmitted via satellite or ground-based radio systems and is received by search and rescue authorities who then initiate a rescue operation.
