Hazardous Attitudes

Anti-authority ("Don’t tell me!")

Example:

Ignoring ATC instructions because the pilot thinks “I know better than the controller.”

Antidote

“Follow the rules — they’re usually right.”

Impulsive ("Do it quickly!")

Example:

Making an abrupt turn in the circuit to “cut in” for landing without looking for other aircraft.

Antidote

“Not so fast — think first.”

Invulnerable ("It won’t happen to me!")

Example:

Continuing flight after minor mechanical issues without considering the risk, assuming “it probably won’t get worse.”

Antidote

“It could happen to me — divert or land if in doubt.”

Macho ("I can do it!")

Example:

Attempting to land in a strong crosswind well above personal or aircraft limits just to prove skill.

Antidote

“Taking chances is foolish — it’s smart to be careful.”

Resignation ("What’s the use?")
