15 Vacating & Joining

This lesson covers the procedures for vacating and joining at both controlled and uncontrolled aerodromes.

At uncontrolled aerodromes, the standard overhead join is the preferred method for entering the traffic circuit when no other method is specified.

This procedure is used by the pilot-in-command under the following circumstances:

  • To assess the runway in use.
  • To familiarise themselves with the aerodrome traffic and conditions.
  • When required by Air Traffic Control (ATC).

For more detailed information on the standard overhead join, the Standard Overhead Join posters are recommended. Copies can be requested by emailing publications@caa.govt.nz.

Objectives

To vacate and join the circuit in accordance with applicable procedures.

To join an uncontrolled circuit in accordance with the standard overhead join procedure.

Considerations

Discuss vacating uncontrolled aerodromes first. Ground preparation is crucial for safe flying, reducing pressure on pilots during flight. These methods are also applicable at controlled aerodromes with a clearance.

Be aware that helicopters may either follow the circuit or avoid it to prevent conflicts with existing traffic.
