14.52 Cooling Systems
14.52.2 Describe the main means for air cooling an engine, including:
(a) cooling fans;
- Cooling fans are used to increase airflow over the engine
- Particularly effective at low speeds or on the ground where natural airflow is limited
- The fan forces air over cylinders, fins, and other hot components
- Common in some installations (e.g. enclosed or rotary engines)
Summary:
Cooling fans provide forced airflow to maintain engine temperature when natural airflow is insufficient.
(b) baffles;
- Baffles are metal plates or seals installed around the engine
- They direct and control airflow over the hottest parts (especially cylinder heads)
- Prevent air from taking the path of least resistance and bypassing cooling areas
- Ensure efficient and even cooling of the engine
