6.40 Route Selection

6.40.2 List the factors to be considered when selecting a VFR cross-country navigation route.

When selecting a route, several factors need to be taken into account:

1. Weather:

Is it suitable for reaching the destination?

Check METARs and TAFs for airports along the route.

2. Terrain:

Can the aircraft climb high enough to meet minimum altitudes?

Ensure that the aircraft can maintain the necessary altitude to clear terrain features, especially in areas with high elevations.

3. Airspace:

Identify the types of airspace you'll be flying through, including controlled, uncontrolled, and special use airspace.

Each type has different requirements and restrictions.

4. Fuel:

Calculate the total fuel required for the flight, including reserves for diversions.

Ensure that the aircraft can carry enough fuel without exceeding its Maximum All-Up Weight (MAUW) and maintaining the Center of Gravity (C of G).

5. Enroute:

What is the plan in case of a forced landing?
