26.2 Electricity and Magnetism

26.2.2 Explain the basic characteristics of an electrical circuit.

An electrical circuit is a complete path through which electric current can flow.

Here are some basic characteristics:

1. Components:

An electrical circuit typically includes components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, and power sources (like batteries or generators). Each component has a specific function in the circuit.

2. Current:

This is the flow of electric charge, measured in amperes (A). In a circuit, current can be either direct current (DC), where the flow is in one direction, or alternating current (AC), where the flow changes direction periodically.

3. Voltage:

Voltage, in its simplest terms, is a measure of the electric potential difference between two points in a circuit.

It can be thought of as the "pressure" that pushes electric charges through a conductor, like water pressure in a pipe pushing water through.

When you have a higher voltage, it means there is a stronger push for the electric current to flow.
