34.34 Blood Donation
34.34.2 Describe the effect on the body of donating blood.
Donating blood causes a temporary reduction in circulating blood volume and the number of red blood cells available to carry oxygen.
This may result in:
lower blood pressure;
light-headedness or dizziness;
weakness or tiredness;
fainting;
reduced concentration and physical performance;
increased susceptibility to hypoxia, particularly at altitude; and
reduced tolerance to G-forces.
Although the fluid portion of the blood is replaced relatively quickly, replacement of red blood cells takes longer.
These effects may temporarily reduce a pilot's ability to operate an aircraft safely.
