20.22 Cloud

20.22.2 Describe the relationship between stability of air and cloud type.

The stability of the atmosphere influences the type of cloud that develops, particularly its shape, vertical extent and associated weather.

Stable air

Stable air resists vertical movement. When air is forced to rise, it tends to spread horizontally rather than continue rising.

This generally produces stratiform (layered) clouds, characterised by:

  • Widespread cloud cover with relatively little vertical development.

  • Smooth or uniform cloud layers.

  • Light or continuous precipitation, if precipitation occurs.

  • Generally smooth flying conditions, although turbulence may still occur.
