12.14 Fuel Injection

12.14.2 State the advantages/disadvantages of fuel injection versus carburetor systems.

Fuel Injection – Advantages

  • More precise fuel metering: Delivers the correct fuel quantity directly, improving efficiency and performance
  • Improved fuel economy: Less fuel wastage compared to carburettors
  • Better engine performance: More even distribution to cylinders and improved throttle response
  • Reduced risk of carburettor icing: No venturi effect, so icing is far less likely
  • Improved starting: Particularly in cold conditions
  • More even cylinder operation: Reduces rough running and improves smoothness

Fuel Injection – Disadvantages

  • Higher cost: More expensive to install and maintain
  • Greater complexity: More components and systems involved
  • Requires cleaner fuel: More sensitive to contamination and blockages
  • Specialist maintenance: Faults can be more difficult to diagnose and repair
