Inversions

Normally, air temperature decreases as altitude increases.

An inversion occurs when the opposite happens and temperature increases with height through a layer of the atmosphere.

This means there is warmer air above cooler air.

An inversion is a very stable layer because the cooler, denser air below resists rising through the warmer air above.

 

Effects of an Inversion

An inversion acts like a lid, limiting the vertical movement of air.

Below the Inversion

Conditions below the inversion are generally stable.

This can cause:

  • haze, smoke and pollution to become trapped;
