4.36 Carriage of Dangerous Goods

4.36.2 State the restriction for the carriage of dangerous goods in an aircraft. CAR Part 92

92.7 General carriage requirements

Offering or accepting dangerous goods

A person must not offer dangerous goods for carriage by air, or accept dangerous goods for carriage by air, unless the dangerous goods are correctly:

  • classified;
  • documented;
  • certificated;
  • described;
  • packaged;
  • marked; and
  • labelled

in accordance with the Technical Instructions.

 

The dangerous goods must also be in the correct condition for shipment as required by the Technical Instructions.

 

A person must not carry dangerous goods by air unless the dangerous goods are:

  • accepted;
  • handled; and
  • carried

in accordance with:

  • the Technical Instructions; or
  • CAR Part 92.

 

Technical Instructions

The Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air are the ICAO rules for carrying dangerous goods by air.

For aviation purposes, when the rules refer to the Technical Instructions, they mean ICAO Doc 9284.

The Technical Instructions cover things such as:

  • what dangerous goods may be carried by air;
  • which dangerous goods are forbidden;
  • packing requirements;
  • quantity limits;
  • marking and labelling;
  • documentation;
  • operator and shipper responsibilities; and
  • emergency response information.
