Requirements for an ELT/PLB

An automatic ELT must:

  • transmit on 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz; and
  • have its location identified near the point of access.

 

An aircraft must normally have an automatic ELT installed.

 

Exceptions

An automatic ELT is not required when:

  • the aircraft has only 1 seat and the pilot carries an ELT(S) or PLB;
  • a glider or microlight carries at least one person equipped with an ELT(S) or PLB; or
  • a glider or powered aircraft, including a microlight, has no more than 2 seats and remains within 10 NM of the aerodrome of departure.
