4.80 Responsibilities of Pilots

4.80.2 State the requirement for the notification of accidents. CAR Part 12

12.51 Notification of accident

The pilot-in-command of an aircraft involved in an accident must notify the Civil Aviation Authority:

  • as soon as practicable.

 

If the pilot-in-command cannot make the notification because they are:

  • injured;
  • deceased; or
  • aboard an aircraft that is missing,

the aircraft operator must notify the Authority.

 

The initial notification must include, where known:

  • the date and time of the accident;
  • the nature of the accident;
  • the aircraft type, nationality, and registration;
  • the names of the aircraft owner and operator;
  • the position or last known position of the aircraft;
  • the name of the pilot-in-command;
  • the type of operation;
  • the last point of departure;
  • the intended destination;
  • the weather conditions;
  • the number of people on board;
  • the number of people killed or seriously injured; and
  • details of damage to the aircraft.
