STRAIGHT & LEVEL

AIM:

To fly the gyro at a constant height, speed & direction.

CONSIDERATIONS:

The 4 Forces Acting on a Gyro in Flight.

Equilibrium     – constant direction & constant airspeed

Lift = Weight                Thrust = Drag

If a stick force is required to maintain S&L

  • trim to remove the stick force

AIRCRAFT MANAGEMENT:

  • Smooth throttle & stick operation
  • Cruise RPM – 4800rpm
  • Fuel management     - pre-flight
  • Oil T’s & P’s - green & normal
  • VFR  - Clear of cloud and in sight of the surface, visibility not less than 1500 m

HUMAN FACTORS:

- IMSAFE

- LOOKOUT -sectored scan

 20degrees/2sec

- Orientation – local landmarks

AIR EXERCISE:

Select ref point on horizon

Select ref altitude

Demo:             S&L @ 70kts/80mph @ 4800rpm

Note                - attitude relative to horizon (level in pitch)

                        - disc level in roll

                        - in balance

                        - trim to remove stick force to maintain attitude

                        - airspeed 70kts/80mph

Lookout             - ref point

Attitude             - visual check nose attitude, disc level & heading constant

Instruments     - confirm visual check (ASI, ALT, Compass)

Student practice:                   maintaining S&L

Off Altitude – (ALT, ASI)

Small adjustment (<50’)

  • Low     - raise nose slightly
  • High    - lower nose slightly

Large adjustment (>50’)

  • Low     - Increase Power, raise nose
  • High    - Decrease Power, lower nose

Off Heading

  • regain ref pt
  • stick & rudder in direction required

Out of Balance

  • step on the ball or pull on the string

Demo:

  • S&L @ low power
  • S&L @ high power

Note               - nose attitude
