08 Slow Flight
Aim:
To slow the gyro and maintain straight and level flight at low airspeed and maintain a constant altitude while turning then return to normal operating airspeeds.
Considerations:
Power + Attitude = Performance.
- Lift = Angle of attack x airspeed
- As airspeed decreases angle of attack must increase to maintain level
- High nose attitude + little extra power required
- Fly the gyroplane at a slow speed, but maintain height
- Less control effectiveness = larger inputs required
- Slipstream effects are less – maintain balance
- Medium level turns – need additional power

Airmanship:
- Lookout
- 20°/2 second scan
- Listen out
- Situational Awareness
- IMSAFE
- Fly using Horizon
- VFR Minima's
- Gyroplane position in training area
- HASELL checks
H Height adequate safe height above the ground
A Airframe configuration – clean or flap
S Security No loose articles, doors and harnesses secure
E Engine T’s & P’s normal, fuel sufficient
L Location Not over populated areas and clear of known traffic areas, including airfields
L Lookout one 180°, or two 90° clearing turns for traffic
Aircraft Management:
- Throttle Use
- Smooth but positive movements
